On the 12th February 2004 at first reading was passed a draft law, which allows and regulates the release of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in the environment of Bulgaria, as well as food containing GMO on the market.
According to many scientists and representatives of environmental organisation, united under the coalition "Bulgaria - GMO Free Zone", the draft law is developed under the influence of multinational corporation, aiming at using Bulgaria as a testing place for GMO and "Troian horse" for the supply of GM food and crops in Europe. The shortcomings of the proposed draft law are likely to be risky and hazardous for the environment and human health. For this reason, the members of this coalition insist on passing a new law, protecting the interests of the citizens and nature, not those of the multinational corporations.
Ban the production and release of genetically modified organisms in Bulgaria!
Since the liberalisation of the GMO will cause irrevirsable consequences to the agriculture, environment, human health and social- economic life in our country, we call upon a moratorium to be decreed on the production and release of GMO in Bulgaria until the end of Bulgarian accession to the European Union.
