Our history
It all began in Bulgaria in 1995, when a group of young people opposed attempts to revive nuclear energy in the country and proposed a vision that combined energy efficiency and the potential of renewable energy sources. The spark ignited a cause with a much broader scope. This led to the creation of the Za Zemata (For the Earth) association, which is now one of the leading independent environmental organizations in Bulgaria.
Over time, its activities and topics expanded, bringing together experts, activists, and volunteers from across the country. In addition to initiating changes to preserve the environment, it created a stable platform for sustainable solutions.
FOR THE EARTH also initiates a number of initiatives and organizations, awakens activists, and educates experts. The principle of environmental justice remains at its core. Today, FOR THE EARTH is an independent non-governmental organization that brings together people who are determined to work towards creating a nature-friendly and equitable life on our planet, one that excludes the exploitation of people and nature.

A lover of the mountains, Desislava began her environmental activism by participating in the first high-altitude cleanup in Pirin National Park in 1999, which is how she became acquainted with and began working for Za Zemata.
After completing her master’s degree in Environmental Sciences and Policies, Desislava worked in Brussels as coordinator of the coalition of European non-governmental organizations Counter Balance: challenging public investment banks, working for transparency and environmental justice in the financing of the European Investment Bank in countries outside Europe.
After gaining international experience, in 2013 she rejoined Za Zemiata, working in the Economic Justice and Zero Waste teams.
She is inspired by the desire for change towards environmental justice at the local level.

Dragomira Raeva
Air
Dragomira met with “Za Zemata” in 1999, when she initiated and organized the association’s first high-altitude cleanup with a group of friends and like-minded people. She then volunteered with the organization for many years, and in 2011 she joined the team.
For the past five years, Drago has been part of the Air team, focusing mainly on policies and measures for clean mobility in the city, with a special focus on active mobility.
Drago has a bachelor’s degree in Environmental and Resource Management and a double master’s degree from Central European University and Lund University in Environmental Science, Policy and Management. After graduating, she worked at the European Environmental Bureau in Brussels on European clean air policies.
The driving force behind her work is the simple complexity and beauty of nature, in which everything, living or non-living, has the right to a dignified existence.

Zero waste
While still a student, she began working in the field of environmental protection and in the NGO sector. She believes that zero waste living is achievable and works to encourage more people to want it.

Todor is dedicated to the topics of long-term energy and climate vision, food independence through natural agriculture, social psychology of transitions, and financial management.
Todor believes in practicing critical thinking and self-change instead of blind optimism. He believes that techno-civilization may soon replace nature.
